The Phoenix Singers - Tenors and High Sopranos needed at present.

The Phoenix Singers have just celebrated their 50th Anniversary and have been described as 'one of the most pre-eminent musical organisations' in Shropshire. They have recently successfully performed J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, where their ‘lyrical’ singing was described as ‘well-tuned and musical’. Other recent concerts included Bach’s Magnificat, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and a concert of Finzi, Tavener and James MacMillan under their conductor Richard Walker. For about twenty years the choir has had cultural/musical exchangewith the Celle Streicherensemble near Hannover. In October 2014 the Phoenix took a programme of Handel and Bach to Germany where they performed with the orchestra in Celle and Ahlden to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Accession of George of Hannover to the British throne. The orchestra will be making a return visit to Shrewsbury in October 2017. The choir has about 45 members and soloists are drawn from professional singers both locally and nationally and a number of now-established performers have made early appearances with the choir. The Phoenix Orchestra is a group of free lance players who are ‘an excellent orchestra, playing with good balance and ensemble……..(and) some spectacular obligato work…’ with their leader Paul Bramwell. In 2011 and 2015 Phoenix organised a Choral Composition Competition which attracted entrants worldwide with winners from England, America and Italy.

The choir aims to have about 40 voices.  Present members include a number of teachers of music as well as numerous instrumentalists together with others with no such qualifications, all bound by a common enthusiasm. At present we would particularly welcome Tenors and Basses.

We welcome new members who can read music, can commit to regular rehearsals and are enthusiastic about singing together. Usually a new member attends about three rehearsals and then will have a short informal audition with the Conductor.
We have 2 or 3 concerts a year. For each concert we have about 10 rehearsals and a rehearsal on the day of the concert. Members are expected to attend as many rehearsals as possible. For the concert the men wear DJ's and black bow ties and the women black trousers / long skirts, and black top, scoop or polo neck (depending on the weather) and a purple jacket, supplied by the choir. We use black folders if we are singing a series of short pieces.

Rehearsals usually take place on Thursdays at Shrewsbury Baptist Church Hall, Crowmere Road, from 7.30pm - 9.30pm and then one or two rehearsals in the venue.

We do other social activities beside singing!

Our after concert parties are great! We have a bring and share party with orchestra and soloists invited too. We have many great cooks in the choir and we lay out a veritable feast.

Come and Sing days. See News page for next event
